Grapefruit Brulee with Ginger Sugar

I was gifted these darling grapefruit spoons from a couple that arefriends of mine. I gave the spoons their rightful introduction by using themfor the first time to scoop succulent ruby red fruit from Grapefruit Brulee.Crunchy, sweet and warm at the top; cool, juicy and tart at the bottom. While I cracked through sugar and slurped tomy heart’s content - I got to thinking about couple gifts. Such a perplexing topic.I stopped and my eyes glazed over as a mile long list of questions cascadedthrough my mind:

How long in a relationship before it is ok to give a gift as a couple?
Who are you and your beau allowed to give joint gifts to and for whatoccasions?
Which couples and at which occasions can a single person give a jointgift to a couple?
Does a couple gift need to be worth twice as much because it is to/fromtwo people?

These questions then lead to more questions, and I could feel my bloodpressure rising. I think I am just going to stay away from couple gifts for now(unless it is for their anniversary) until you write me a comment explaining tome what is socially acceptable and what is not. For now I will just teach youhow to make my brunch secret weapon, Grapefruit Brulee.

Grapefruit Brulee with Ginger Sugar
makes 4 Servings

Ginger  Sugar Ingredients
makes ½ Cup
½ Cup Sugar
2 Pieces Candied Ginger

Grapefruit Brulee Ingredients
2 Ruby Red Grapefruits, Halved
4 TB Ginger Vanilla Sugar

To make ginger sugar: combine sugar and crystallized ginger in your food processorand pulse until fully combined and the pieces of ginger are the same size as the granules of sugar. Store in your refrigerator. Sprinkle 1Tablespoon of sugar (Raw, white or brown all work as well) over the halvedgrapefruit. Careful to keep the sugar on the fruit and not the white pith. The pith burns faster than the fruit. Place the sugared grapefruit halves under the broiler for about 7 minutes oruntil the sugar has caramelized. Allow to cool a minute before serving, thiswill allow the sugars to harden forming the quintessential brulee crust. Youcan help it along with a tiny torch as well.

2 halves of grapefruit brulee and a cup of tea combine to create a Key Pajama Breakfast. Freshen up the next brunch you host with these instead of afruit salad, your friends with think you are a genius. Milky Lattes andMuffins. Done. I recommend eating them warm with a grapefruit spoon, but theyare delicious at room temperature as well.
